Consumer

For Safe Operation

  • Follow all instructions and warnings in the owner's manual and on the appliance itself.

  • Make sure the lid is correctly positioned before beginning operation.

  • Do not overfill the cooker. NEVER fill the appliance above the marked maximum fill line.

  • ALWAYS allow internal pressure to fully dissipate before attempting to open the lid.

  • NEVER force the lid open.

  • Do not use the appliance if it is damaged or is not operating as intended.

  • Opening a pressure cooker while it remains pressurized can cause a sudden release of hot steam, liquid or food and may result in burns or other injuries.

Resistance Is a Safety Signal

After the cooking cycle is complete, release pressure as directed in the owner's manual and on the appliance itself.

The lid will open easily after pressure has fully dissipated. When pressure is released, the lid should be as easy to open as it was to put on at the beginning of the cycle. If the lid is difficult to turn or remove, the cooker may still be pressurized.

If the lid resists, stop. Never force it open.

Understanding Product Safety Features

The 6-Quart Power Quick Pot incorporates multiple safety features to keep the lid secured while pressure remains inside the cooker and to help consumers determine when the appliance can be opened safely.

Lid-Position Sensor

A magnetic lid-position sensor is designed to prevent the pressure-cooking function from beginning unless the lid is properly positioned. The appliance will beep and display "LID" if the lid is not correctly positioned.

Double-Locking System

The cooker incorporates two locking mechanisms designed to work together to keep the lid secured while pressure remains inside the cooker.

The system is intentionally designed to resist opening while the cooker is pressurized, helping protect consumers from premature opening and the sudden release of hot contents.

Lid Handle

The handle is designed for comfortable one-handed opening after internal pressure has fully dissipated.

Once pressure has been fully released, the lid is intended to turn and lift off easily. If the lid does not open easily, the cooker may still be pressurized.

If the lid resists, stop. Never force it open.

Audible Alerts

The products provide audible alerts when the lid is not properly positioned and at other points during operation when consumer attention may be required.

Pressure-Release System

The pressure-release system provides physical and visual indications while pressure is being released.

To release pressure:

  1. Press the Cancel Button.
  2. Move the Release Switch from the Closed position to the Open position.
  3. Allow steam and internal pressure to escape from the cooker.
  4. Wait until steam is no longer coming from the Pressure Release Valve.
  5. Open the lid only when it turns and lifts easily.

If the lid resists, stop. Resistance may indicate that pressure remains inside the appliance.

CAUTION: Hot steam may be released during this process. Do not place your face, hands or body near the valve opening.

Visual Operating Cues

The product's LCD display changes color from blue to red when the cook cycle begins and from red to blue when the cook cycle ends. Consumers should follow the owner's manual and the instructions on the appliance itself and NEVER attempt to open the lid while the cooker is operating or while pressure remains inside.

Testing Summary

Testing & Safety Certification

Independent Certification

Testing and certification were conducted by UL, an independent safety science organization that evaluates products against established safety requirements. Their rigorous testing process helps ensure that products align with applicable requirements and expectations.

The 6-Quart Power Quick Pot design was independently evaluated and certified to UL 136 before it was sold. UL 136 includes a standardized cover-opening test for pressure-cooker lids that requires it to resist application of 100 pounds of a static load without a dangerous release of steam or contents.

Understanding the 100-Pound Test

The UL 136 test is designed to be controlled and repeatable. Calibrated equipment applies 100 pounds of force to the lid at the prescribed point and angle, so the result does not depend on a person's grip, strength or testing technique.

Why Standardized Testing Matters

Testing methodology affects the results of a test and the conclusions that can reasonably be drawn from it.

UL 136 establishes a standardized and reproducible method for evaluating pressure cooker lid performance. It specifies:

  • The condition and fill level of the pressure cooker
  • The point at which force is applied
  • The direction and angle of the force
  • The amount of force applied
  • The equipment used to apply or measure the force

The test applies 100 pounds of controlled force at a specified point and angle under defined conditions.

These controls allow the test to be performed consistently and the results to be reliably reproduced.

Tristar's Response to CPSC's Statement

Tristar is aware of CPSC's recent statement regarding the 6-Quart Power Quick Pot, Model Y6D-36, and respectfully disagrees with the agency's conclusions.

Tristar takes consumer safety seriously. The 6-Quart Power Quick Pot design was independently evaluated and certified to UL 136 before it was sold. Tristar believes the product is safe to use when operated according to the owner's manual, the warnings on the appliance and the pressure-release instructions.

Tristar has not agreed to a recall because it does not agree with CPSC's conclusions.

As with any pressure cooker, consumers should allow pressure to fully release before opening the lid. If the lid resists, stop. Never force it open.
